magic — 9z

magic19
9z17

Ancient · half-time 6:6 · match on HLTV

magic's offense was almost entirely tied to the opening duel: eight of nine T-rounds came after an opening kill, and without one the team won only once. Late in the map, the weapon advantage stopped mattering three times, but the decisive moment was 9z's late hit on B, where magic kept its usual defender pair and overturned a 4v5.

What decided the map

  1. magic's T-side depended heavily on the first kill: a successful opening almost guaranteed a competitive round, while losing it left the team with very few paths to victory.

magic won 10 opening duels and took 8 of the corresponding rounds — 80% conversion against a dataset benchmark of 67%; the team won only one of the eight rounds without an opening.

  2. 9z often delayed the first contact until the very end of the round on its T-side, especially when dgt was looking for space.

9z found only 6 openings across 18 T-rounds, with a median timecode of 1:28; dgt recorded 3 first kills with the same median of 1:28, and the overall conversion from those openings was 4 of 6.

  3. Late in the map, execution quality outweighed the buy: three consecutive economic upsets prevented either team from consolidating an advantage.

In the 27th round, 9z's force buy beat magic's full buy; in the 32nd, 9z repeated this at 16:15; and in the 33rd, magic's force buy stopped the opponent's full buy.

How to use this

Against magic

  • In the first 20 seconds, close the Lower Mid — Outside connection with an additional flash or a second player holding the angle: tenzy found 4 openings with a median of 0:17 and had previously occupied these areas in 69 of 80 T-rounds.
  • After winning the first duel against magic's offense, avoid isolated repeeks in Main Hall and A Site: 8 of its 10 openings became round wins, while the team took only 1 of 8 rounds without an opening.
  • Split magic's A hit between Main Hall and A Site: only 3 of its 20 T-side deaths on A Site were traded, and none of the 5 in Lower Mid were traded.

Against 9z

  • Keep a smoke or molotov for B Ramp, Cave, and Side Entrance after 1:20: the median timecode of 9z's T-side openings was 1:28, while the key first contacts from dgt and HUASOPEEK came at 1:30 and 1:37.
  • On the CT-side, check luchov in Alley and Side Entrance with a flash before committing: in this match, he played Alley in 6 of 18 rounds instead of his usual B Short and found the opening from there in the 32nd round.
  • Do not give dgt isolated duels in House and Side Hall around 0:30–0:35: he recorded 4 CT-side openings with a median of 0:33, and 9z converted 7 of 8 won first contacts.

How it looked

  1. R10

tenzy activated magic's winning T-side pattern

magic opened the round with a familiar utility package: smokes in A Short at 0:02 and 0:04, a smoke in Cat Room at 0:06, and a tenzy molotov from Lower Mid into Middle at 0:08. tenzy then moved into Outside and created the first advantage at 0:17; this route matched the team's previous pattern, where he was in Lower Mid in 51 of 80 T-rounds and in Outside in 18 of 80. Even after his death, AW was close enough in Lower Mid to trade back by 0:20. This gave magic one of the eight T-rounds it won after its own opening and started a five-round streak.

After this opening (72 similar rounds on the map on a force buy): the bomb goes down in 28% of rounds against 55%.

    Steps
  2. R27

9z's force buy waited for Side Entrance

9z used its standard opening utility with two grenades in Lower Mid at 0:09 and 0:10 and a dgt smoke in B Ramp at 0:11, but the first contact did not come until 1:30. dgt moved into Side Entrance and found the opening against magic's full buy; AW traded him, but HUASOPEEK immediately restored a 4v3 advantage for 9z in the same area. The late contact reduced the defenders' time to adjust, and mo0N was then left on B Short against a fully developed hit. This timing was typical of 9z's T-half and was the first of three buy upsets late in the map.

    Steps
  3. R32

magic's full buy collapsed without a response

9z's force buy started with a smoke and molotov in Lower Mid at 0:02 and 0:06 while also blocking Wood and Cat Room with grenades from the B side. At 0:43, luchov found sFade8 from Side Entrance, and the death in TSide Upper went untraded. MaSvAl and AW then died in Main Hall and A Site without a response, bringing the alive count to T2 — CT5. In the end, none of magic's five deaths were traded, again confirming the team's dependence on first contact: losing the opening with a full buy ended in a flawless round.

After this opening (7 similar rounds on the map on a full buy): the bomb goes down in 43% of rounds against 60%; the attack takes the round in 71% against 56%.

    Steps
  4. R36 · 1:59

magic's usual B core closed out the map

9z again delayed the finish: HUASOPEEK's first kill came only at 1:37 between Side Entrance and B Site, giving the offense a 5v4. However, AW held the B side through Cave — close to his previous role, where B Short was his position at the 20-second mark in 49 of 69 CT-rounds, with Cave appearing in another 6. Within a few seconds, AW and tenzy reduced the offense to two players, leaving HUASOPEEK alone on B Site. His final death to mo0N in Alley went untraded, accurately reflecting the overall problem with 9z's T-side: only 9% of deaths were traded against a dataset benchmark of 19%.

Bottom line

magic won Ancient through the high value of its T-side openings and stable B defense in the final round, despite twice losing to a weaker buy late in the map. 9z managed to take the map to overtime through late decisions and economic upsets, but 9% of T-side deaths were traded, leaving too little backup on the decisive hit.
