The MongolZ — paiN

The MongolZ13
paiN4

Inferno · half-time 8:4 · match on HLTV

The MongolZ turned the map around through the economy: six of their eight T-side rounds came on force buys, while the full-buy loss in round five pushed paiN into continuous weak buys. The paiN defense took the opening contact more often but failed to retain the resulting advantage; after the side switch, the Brazilian attack ran into the opponent's heavy investment in Banana.

What decided the map

  1. The MongolZ turned force buys into their main source of rounds and denied the paiN defense a full economy for an extended period.

Six of The MongolZ's eight T-side wins came on force buys: rounds 5, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12. After losing the full buy in the fifth, paiN finished the half with five force buys and two ecos over the next seven rounds.

  2. The paiN defense often created a player advantage, but allowed The MongolZ to restore parity through extended rounds and return contacts.

paiN won 8 of 12 opening duels as CT but converted only 4 of those rounds: 50% conversion against the Inferno benchmark of 66%. The lost openings came in rounds 8, 10, 11 and 12; the defense died 15 times on A Site, and only 27% of those deaths were traded.

  3. The MongolZ's attack maintained a threat at both ends of the map, starting from the team's usual heavy presence in Mid.

The MongolZ's utility landed in Apartments in 9 of 12 T rounds, Banana in 8 of 12, CT Spawn in 7 of 12, and A Long in 6 of 12. They had played this way before: the 5 Mid setup appeared in 46 of 74 rounds, while at the 20-second mark 910 was in Second Mid in 50 of 74, with bLitz and Techno4K there in 44 of 73 each.

How to use this

Against The MongolZ

  • After their heavy opening through Second Mid, save one grenade each for Apartments and Banana: on this map, The MongolZ invested in these areas in 9 of 12 and 8 of 12 T rounds respectively.
  • Against their CT side, wait out the opening Banana utility package and return with a flash after 0:20: historically, The MongolZ's smokes and Molotovs often landed there at 0:07–0:11, while in this match the area received 10 of the defense's 24 early utility throws.
  • On Apartments exits, dislodge 910 with a flash or Molotov in advance: this was his position at the 20-second mark in 20 of 48 previous CT rounds, and here he opened the final round from Apartments at 0:12.

Against paiN

  • Use an early flash in Apartments to force saffee off his angle: he started there in 24 of 72 CT rounds, often with the AWP, while piriajr was positioned in Pit in 29 of 72.
  • Show pressure in Banana and return through Apartments or A Long: snow previously rotated from Arch to B Site in 13 rounds, and biguzera from CT Spawn to B Site in 12, creating a window for renewed pressure on A.
  • Isolate B Site and Library with a smoke in CT Spawn and a flash through Ruins: paiN lost four players in each of these two areas as CT, and none of the eight deaths were traded.

How it looked

  1. R5 · 0:52

The force buy that broke paiN's buys

The MongolZ stretched paiN's full buy between Banana and A: by 0:26, 910's smoke was already down in A Site, and at 0:45 bLitz smoked off A Long. bLitz opened the round from Middle against biguzera, and the death went untraded; at 0:52, he then found snow in Library — the situation became 4 vs 3, and the attack's win probability rose from 50% to 79%. The defense found no return contact in either Library or A Site, although piriajr had previously killed 910. The cost of the sequence extended beyond one point: paiN played the next seven CT rounds without a single full buy.

After this opening (5 similar rounds on the map on a force buy): the hit goes A in 67% against the map's usual 41%; the bomb goes down in 80% of rounds against 62%; the defense answers with “utility_stall” in 100% against 85%.

    Double failure in Banana

The MongolZ's force buy again showed pressure in both directions: DarkMeister threw a smoke into Apartments at 0:06, 910 sent a Molotov into Banana at 0:09, and bLitz smoked off CT Spawn at 0:36. paiN responded with a heavy set of grenades in Banana, but at 0:33 DarkMeister and bLitz simultaneously killed snow and biguzera in that area. Both deaths went untraded, immediately leaving the defense in a 3 vs 5, and the bomb was planted by 0:43. This round started The MongolZ's streak of 11 consecutive wins and showed why paiN's utility investment in Banana alone was not enough.

After this opening (65 similar rounds on the map on a full buy): the hit goes B in 100% against the map's usual 60%; the bomb goes down in 85% of rounds against 60%; the attack takes the round in 80% against 55%.

saffee's usual position failed to preserve the advantage

saffee opened the round with the AWP from Apartments at 0:40 — a familiar area for him: he had previously been there at the 20-second mark in 24 of 72 CT rounds and used the AWP in 33 of 72. The MongolZ did not accelerate after losing DarkMeister: bLitz's smoke in A Long landed at 0:45, and the next successful contact came only at 1:28. Even when paiN regained the advantage twice, 910 responded from Middle and A Site, first turning 3 vs 4 into 3 vs 3, then 2 vs 3 into 2 vs 2. saffee's opening kill ultimately became one of four CT openings that paiN failed to convert into a round.

After this opening (200 similar rounds on the map on a full buy): the bomb goes down in 42% of rounds against 60%.

Broken economy

  • R5 — paiN lost a full buy against a force buy

Bottom line

The MongolZ showed an attack capable of winning without comfortable buys: their familiar Mid opening gave them transitions toward both ends of the map, while force buys kept extending the opponent's economic deficit. More concerning than the score for paiN was their play after the opening kill — four lost CT openings and weak trades on A Site prevented the defense from converting strong starts.
